SUBAK
GANGGANGAN
Bali is known to the
world for it’s diverse culture that was created from the
Balinese agricultural life since hundreds of years ago. Every process of
agrarian life in Balinese society is known as Subak. Subak is the soul of the
life and cultural order of the Balinese people. Therefore to develop this
culture, several places have implemented the subak system. One of them is the
Subak Ganggangan located in Banjar Pagi, Senganan Village, Penebel, Tabanan.
Subak Ganggangan is a
vast stretch of rice fields overlooking Mt. Batukaru so that it can add to the
beauty of subak. This place is also one of the tracking paths for riders who
drive their trail after visiting Jatiluwih attractions. In addition, with a
cool and beautiful atmosphere can invite foreign tourists and local tourists to
visit the subak ganggangan. Tourists visiting this place will be invited to
surround the rice fields while enjoying the freshness of young coconut water
that is directly picked from the tree. Tourists who feel tired after going
around the rice fields will be invited to take a break while sitting in the
farmer's hut there. Not only that, often tourists visiting this place have a
purpose to conduct research on agricultural systems that have been carried out
there. They can also buy rice directly as souvenirs. Therefore, to support
these activities, farmers in subak ganggangan always try to maintain their
fields by implementing an agricultural system called the Uma Wali system.
The Uma Wali system
teaches farmers to process the land in a natural way, namely by using manure
from the cattle breeders group in Bantas Kaja Tengah. In addition, farmers also
make liquid fertilizer which is often referred to as Local Organism Microbial
(LOM). This fertilizer comes from materials that are around the location to be
processed or fermented into liquid fertilizer. This system has the main goal so
that farmers can produce quality rice. Some grain will be ground into rice to
be sold to tourists or people from other regions. And some of it will be stored
by farmers for family needs and seed stock in the next planting season. The
water obtained by farmers to replenish their fields comes from the source of
the Batukaru mountain spring which immediately flows so hard and clear. So that
it can increase soil fertility.
Evidently, the Uma
Wali process has produced 3 types of healthy rice, such as White Rice, Brown
Rice and Black Rice. The success is inseparable from the role of several owls
of the type of Tyto Alba which were released freely by the management of the
subak ganggangan around the rice fields. This owl is very instrumental in
eradicating mouse pests that disturb rice plants. Hence the Owl Dance was
created. This dance is performed by a group of children from the village with a
classic tone. The show was held on one of the home pages of local residents.
Tourists will be invited to watch this dance after the activity ends or becomes
the closing event.
So tourists who want
to visit this place don’t worry because access to this location is good because
the road already on the asphalt and its location can be reached by the map
application. To get to this location, tourists can use private cars or mini bus
(ELF). (Ni Made Alit Pudak Wangi/MBP 5D/24)
